At CM2A, we have developed the Controlled Atmosphere Stunning (CAS) tunnel, a patented technology (EP18178612) recognised worldwide for combining animal welfare, regulatory compliance and industrial performance. Meat quality is improved.
We are the only manufacturer to have mastered every stage of the stunning process with a bespoke, robust and scalable solution, suitable for all species: chickens, hens, turkeys, ducks, etc., and capable of processing 2,000 to 15,000 birds per hour.
Our stunning tunnel meets regulatory requirements as well as consumer expectations regarding animal welfare: it complies with European Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing, ensuring irreversible stunning before processing.
Our technology is compatible with the requirements of the Better Chicken Commitment, a voluntary commitment by stakeholders across the poultry sector to improve poultry farming, transport and slaughter practices.
Animal welfare and reduced petechiae
Our stunning tunnel provides a gradual killing by exposing the birds to an atmosphere with reduced O₂ levels in several stages.
This gradual reduction in O₂ levels inside the tunnel has been shown to significantly reduce muscle haemorrhaging (petechiae) and improve water retention in the meat compared with electrical water-bath stunning methods.
Unlike electrical stunning after the birds have been hung, the CM2A tunnel eliminates the need for operators to handle live birds.
Reducing petechiae has a direct impact on the quality of the finished product: 30 to 50% fewer petechiae compared with conventional electrical stunning in accordance with European regulations.
Improved product presentation: less downgrading and fewer rejections at the abattoir.
Stable pH, preserved colour and texture: higher-quality meat, with fewer bruises and improved water retention.
A CO₂-efficient solution
The CM2A tunnel optimises CO₂ consumption by controlling every parameter of the stunning process: with gas injection regulated according to throughput.
The inlet and outlet airlocks limit gas losses, further enhancing the its energy and environmental efficiency.
Capable of handling throughputs of 2,000 to 15,000 birds per hour, it combines productivity, animal welfare and improved working conditions for operators.
Its cleanability has been designed to simplify washing operations at the end of production. Maintenance requirements were considered from the design stage to facilitate servicing.
